Since returning to Houston, there was one thing that I was starting to crave: a good Banh Mi Sandwich. Houston has a bunch of banh mi restaurants, but if you need to satisfy your craving without driving all the way out to Bellaire/Chinatown, Les Givral's Sandwich & Cafe in Midtown is a great choice for a few reasons: it's extremely cheap, has fairly fast service, and tastes delicious!
A banh mi sandwich is a French baguette stuffed with Vietnamese good-ness. The restaurant offers a variety of meats as the base for your sandwich, such as meatballs, chargrilled chicken, and tofu. Here, the bread is spread with their homemade mayo and the meat is topped with pickled carrots, cilantro, cucumber, and a jalepeño wedge. I usually go for the standard Banh Mi Thit Nuong, which has chargrilled pork (but no pate, sorry not a fan!). And get this, a majority of the sandwiches are under 3 bucks, with my sandwich being only $2.50! When you first walk in, there is also a station to pick up some ready-to-eat appetizers while you wait in line to order, such as egg rolls and spring rolls with an addicting peanut sauce. In addition, they offer canned Asian drinks to go with your meal, which is a plus.
Les Givral's also offers Rice and Vermicelli Plates and Pho, but I usually just go for the banh mi sandwiches since it is their specialty. Their bread is perfect: crispy on the outside while being soft on the inside. This is a great place to stop for a lunch break, after work on the way home, or anytime you are craving a good Vietnamese banh mi sandwich while driving around the city.
